We have new players who would love to learn and understand how a mission is done. If someone is willing, I think it could be really helpful for them to have a full walkthrough of one mission with explicaton on what tool to use, hint to help them with the logic of the puzzle, etc... What do you think
For a brand new player, I agree, it would be a wise move. Otherwise we risk alienating those totally unfamiliar with the way these missions typically work. Even I have looked at missions occasionally and felt myself despair. I'd hate to think what a totally new player would feel...
I think this an excellent idea, but I don't feel comfortable making a walk-through for one of the community missions. I think their creators ought to have first crack at it if they want. I can come up with a proposal for a Mission 16 walk-through, though. Do I just post it here?
I posted an overly-detailed walkthrough of mission 18 here. I could clean it up a bit, it has both notes about the sequence and some of my thought process while making it. It doesn't really involve the tools (i.e. asciitohex.com) that someone might use though. It was best done with pen and paper...
Thanks Rohva, this is exactly what I was looking for! =) The post was move in Ongoing Mission section.
You’re very welcome. If anyone has any corrections or suggestions for improvement to offer let me know. Moderators, of course, just go ahead and just edit it if anything needs to be changed.
Not sure if you still need this (I saw there is already one online), but I figured I'd still post it anyway. MISSION GUIDE Being a new members of a top secret organization can be a bit daunting, so I have written a small guide that will help you solve a basic mission. The mission we will be looking at is Mission 20: Hell Hath No Fury This mission starts with a missions briefing video. These videos serve as an introduction to the mission you are about to do, but they can also include important clues, so be sure to watch them. In the main mission screen, you can see that this missions has three parts in total. We will be looking at all three of them separately and really focus on how to solve them and what you have to pay attention to while solving a missions. 1. DIV-66 TRANSMISSION INTERCEPTED The first thing to do when starting a new task, is figuring out what is expected from you. The mission description gives some basic info and in this case additional info can be found in one of the text clues. You can read that a file has been stolen from the Black Watchmen and that the someone has been arrested. The most important piece of information is that the laptop of this person is in our possession. Finding the password to this laptop is your main goal right now. Spoiler: CLUE ONE The first clue is a text clue and provides more insight into the story and gives you a little bit of additional information about what is going on. In this case you won’t really be needing the first clue, but it is good to keep in mind that clues are always there for a reason, so don’t just skip them. This clue reveals that the man who has been captured in named Christ Baanders and that he has has been working with an unidentified civilian. Spoiler: CLUE TWO The second clue is a visual clue, namely the passport of Chris Baanders. This clue does not only provide some information about Baanders, but you will also need it in order to solve the actual puzzle. We’ll come back to this one later. Spoiler: CLUE THREE The third clue is probably the most important right now. It would appear that Chris has set a password hint for his laptop, which will help us to access his files. The password hint is: Onrecht aan een groot krijger. There is also a fourth clue to be found if you look at the bar where you have to type the information. You can see that the format for the password is XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX. This will help you later on to determine whether or not you are on the right track. Figuring out the correct answer Spoiler: STEP ONE The passport reveals that Chris is Dutch. Putting the password hint in google translate and setting the language to Dutch reveals the text: injustice to a great warrior. This is the main clue you will have to work with. Spoiler: STEP TWO The first thing you have to do here, is figure out who this great warrior is that the password hint is talking about. Google is really your best friend when it comes to this kind of thing, but what kind of search queries are you going to use? From the passport we know that Chris is Dutch, so it might be a good idea to start looking for famous Dutch people. Spoiler: STEP THREE But how can we determine whether or not we have found the right person? A crucial piece of information can be found in the passport. Chris is from a small village called Kimswerd, a villiage where a historical figure called Grote Pier or Pier Gerlofs was also born. The second names fits the first part of the password format, so you could be on the right track, but what do you have to do with the last four symbols? Spoiler: STEP FOUR If you read through the Wikipedia page for Pier Gelofs, you will find a lot of information about him, but what are we looking for here? The password hint speaks about an injustice that was done to him. If you read the Wikipedia page carefully, you will see that something terrible happened to Pier back in 1515. Could this be related? It certainly fits the password format. Spoiler: SOLUTION Entering Pier Gerlofs 1515 completes the first part of the puzzle. 2. INCOMING MESSAGE FROM DIV-79 So you have solved the first part of the mission, but you are not there yet. The second mission deals with information that was obtained from Baander’s Phone. The most important thing about the mission description right now, is the request for information. This mission has you dig through the evidence so far and find a lead for the watchmen to follow. Spoiler: CLUE ONE The first clue is again a story based clue. It provides some additional insight into Baander’s activities and tells you to track down the person that he is working for. The identity of this person is still unknown, but this mission should change that. Spoiler: CLUE TWO The second clue is also a story based clue and it ties in with the first part of the mission. This is the file that Baander’s stole from the digital archives. The goal of this clue is to create the stakes for the mission. The consequence of failure is high. Spoiler: CLUE THREE The third clue is really the most important one here. This is the data that was obtained from the phone. If you are going to find any answers here, this is the place to start. But what exactly are we looking at here? Chances are that you know that this is binary data you are looking at, but if you don’t, google is again your best friend. Recognizing these type of data and ciphers can be a bit challenging. Figuring out the correct answer Spoiler: STEP ONE You will want to find a website that helps you to easily translate this binary data to ordinary text since it doesn’t help you much in this form. An good example of a website to use for this is http://www.unit-conversion.info/texttools/convert-text-to-binary/. This reveals the following url: http://tinyurl.com/p8tlnft/. Spoiler: STEP TWO When you access the url, you will find yet another cipher, but this one is different from the previous one. There are many different ciphers out there and it might be a good idea to study and try to recognize them because they are commonly used in the black watchmen. A good website to convert ciphers to text is [url here]. This particular cipher is [name here]. Converting it to text gives you: DATE: 07-20-2014 RECIPIENT: CAPTAIN WILLIAM PATRICK RUPTURE SITE 07-13: SITE DISCOVERED AND ARTIFACT OBTAINED RUPTURE SITE 07-14: RUPTURE SITE BECOMES UNSTABLE RUPTURE SITE 07-15: CASUALTY ALEXANDER CORTEZ RUPTURE SITE 07-16: RUPTURE SITE CLOSED RUPTURE SITE 07-20: FLUCTUATIONS DETECTED Spoiler: STEP THREE The next question you have to ask yourself is which of these events could possibly be related to the hack. Due to themes like necromancy, 07-15, the day on which Alexander Cortez died, is your best bet. Spoiler: SOLUTION The date of the message was listed as 2014, so the date that you want more information about is 07-15-2014. 3. DIV-42 REQUESTING ORDERS The last and final step of this missions completes the story through several clues, but doesn’t actually present you with a puzzle. If you look at all the different clues and the amount of letters in the password hint you should be able to figure out what is being asked of you.
