Sometimes the entity may move in ways that you don't anticipate-- I think there were times that it didn't quite follow the pattern, but I can't recall as I did this so long ago.. It's half anticipating the location, half dumb luck.

Thanks a lot @zaelong but I'm afraid I'm still stuck. Spoiler According to this http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=2001&country=29 there was full moon on 10 March, so it would be pattern B. However, I'm still unable to locate the entity, all I've managed is to get killed. I've used 1 step left 2 steps up, 1 step right 2 steps up and 1 step left 3 steps up, 1 step right 3 steps up. I've also assumed that the entity changes the direction once it gets to any limit of the grid. I don't really know what I'm doing wrong a this point.
I'm inclined to chip in here to say that I just got it through sheer dumb luck, and without losing anyone! So that's nice. Sorry to say I have no additional intel to give you, though.
Just a heads up to anyone seeing this, as of 30MAR2016, 9.1 has been changed, the document you are given has some additional information on it, and the old answer is no longer accepted. I'm stuck here looking for the answer because the previous solution everyone here has found no longer works. EDIT: Marker Pegs.

Gave up on the third part cause I got too frustrated. Watched a video and just copy-pasted the confirmation code. No regrets.

Zaelong are you sure it hasn't changed? I've been bashing my head against this one. I gave in and watched the twitch and realized I had found the same answer in the stream. The current 9.1 puzzle has a drawing where the earlier puzzle did not. The answer appears to be 4 letters... I'm stuck.
